There is not sufficient room in the context of an article like this to address all of these issues, so I will limit this article to only a few items, and discuss others in future articles.

Amazon has by far the largest base of potential customers, and sales through Amazon exceed all the other online marketplaces combined. However, if you choose to market your books through Amazon, you have absolutely no control over the shipping rates that are paid by the customer and Amazon is not very quick to adjust their shipping charges when the postage rates increase. To date there has not been any adjustment to the Amazon charges for postage since the last postage increase and as a bookseller this means you will need to absorb the added postage costs to you while Amazon continues to take the same cut of what they charge the customers. Stated bluntly, it is not in Amazon’s best interest to adjust shipping charges to the customers because increases in postage costs have no impact on how much Amazon gets, while an increase passed on to the customer could have an adverse impact on Amazon because some customers might choose another marketplace or decide not to buy the book at all.

One robust feature of Amazon is their feedback system which I have not seen rivaled by any other marketplace. While it is great if you maintain a feedback score of better than 95%, it can put you out of business quickly if you do not do what is necessary to maintain customer satisfaction.

Alibris has a few features that compete well with Amazon. One of the greatest feature of Alibris is their return policy. If you sell a book for less than $100 and a customer changes their mind and decides to return the book, you do not need to give a refund, Alibris takes the book into their inventory. This is true for any reason a customer might want to return a book except for books shipped that do not meet the grading you assigned when you listed them. Another great feature of Alibris is their marketing to libraries that results in additional sales for the online bookseller. When Alibris sells a book to a library from your inventory, you simply package the book and affix an Alibris postage due sticker and send the book to Alibris. As with Amazon, you do not have any control over the shipping rates charged to the customers, but in the case of library sales it doesn’t matter anyway. If it weren’t for the fact that the Alibris’ customer base is so much smaller than that of Amazon, there could easily be an argument made for exclusively listing through Alibris.

Abebooks is an altogether different marketplace. At one time I listed exclusively through Abebooks and had affiliate arrangements through my Abebooks account that allowed me to sell my books through Abebooks, Amazon, Half, Barnes and Noble, as well as a host of many small online marketplaces. When Amazon ceased to allow affiliate programs, and other affiliate programs were also dropped for Abebooks members, sales through Abebooks dropped dramatically. In fact they continued to drop to a point where I was only selling enough books through Abebooks to pay my listing fee. At the same time, there are many booksellers that still only list through Abebooks and do quite well. One of the greatest features of Abebooks is the ability to set your own shipping rates (domestic and international) within their guidelines.

Ebay has recently been making a number of changes directed toward recapturing the online bookselling market, but unless you are selling collections by specific authors, book series, collectible, rare, or niche market books, ebay selling is still a hassle for most booksellers. If you do sell books through ebay, you cannot simply provide an ISBN and have the rest of your book’s information and cover displayed, and personally I have not found it worth my time to take digital pictures of every $10 book in my inventory, create a separate auction for each of them, and then renew the auctions each 10 days if the book doesn’t sell.

Ultimately, there is no one marketplace that outperforms all the others with respect to the desires of the online bookseller and each bookseller must weigh the pros and cons of each marketplace to make their own choice. Alternatively, you could choose to do like some booksellers, myself included, and list your inventory through a couple of the available marketplaces and let all the cons of each average out over the long run while capitalizing on the better points offered by the different marketplaces.

You unwittingly and naturally reach for such snacks because of the food you chose to eat earlier at an earlier meal. If you start the day with three or four slices of white bread spread with fruit jam or margarine and then wash it down with coffee and sugar, you can be sure you will be craving for snacks by mid-morning even though your breakfast was a filling one.

When your food made up primarily of carbohydrate, especially refined carbohydrate like white bread and pizzas, with little protein or fat, not to mention high in sugar, your blood glucose surges crazily following that meal.

To counter the effect of extreme glucose surge in your blood stream, your pancreas will pump more insulin than usual to bring your blood glucose level down. What happens then is that your blood glucose surges will then dip lower than your pre-meal level. When this happens, you start to get hungry and crave for more sweet stuff and more carbohydrate. This is why you reach for sweet snacks and drinks instinctively. Thus the vicious cycle continues again and again and you are eating more and more calories. So choosing the food in your meal is important so that you will not get hungry fast and then consume more calories to satisfy that hunger upsetting your natural weight loss dieting program.

When more carbohydrate is consumed than can be stored by your liver and muscles as glycogen, they are naturally converted to fat. So what should you do?

Well, you can start to limit your carbohydrate consumption (note that I said limit and not stop) and on top of that, choose slow digesting carbohydrates especially carbohydrate with fibers like fibrous vegetables, fruits, legumes, brown rice and brown bread, your insulin spike will not be so eccentric and therefore you will not get hungry or having your sweet tooth so often.

Now think about it, if you do not reach for your snacks and sugary drinks that often, it means that you are consuming fewer calories. So if your caloric consumption is less than your caloric expenditure, you are right on a natural weight loss dieting program without even realizing it. Better still, you are not going on a hunger and starvation diet because you will not get hungry that easily.

Flying rc airplanes and helicopters has become a hugely popular pastime in recent years, and more and more people are discovering the hobby on a global scale.

The letters RC stand for radio control, and refer to anything that is controlled by radio signals that are sent out from a transmitter to a receiver.
You’ll often see rc referred to as ‘remote control’ but this is technically incorrect. Radio control is the correct term.

RC airplanes and (especially) rc helicopters have traditionally been expensive to buy, and you had to have a fair amount of model-building knowledge to know how to assemble a kit from plans, not to mention knowing how to install the radio control gear properly and of course the motor.
But all that has changed and, while kits are still available of course, airplanes and helicopters nowadays can be bought as ‘RTF‘ models, or Ready To Fly. This basically means what it says; the model is assembled at the factory, the rc gear and motor have been installed and set up and there is nothing for you, the consumer, to do apart from install the radio control gear batteries, do some very basic final assembly work such as attaching the wing to the fuselage, and taking to the skies!

RTF airplanes and helicopters can be powered by either electric or glow plug motors. The latter is often referred to as ‘nitro’ or ‘gas’ because the fuel that a glow plug motor runs on contains nitromethane.
Nitro planes need a few extra accessories than electric ones do, simply because of the motor. Also, nitro planes are much bigger and have a steeper learning curve.

Electric rc airplanes are far more common for people entering the hobby. They are clean, quiet and simple. The very popular ‘Park Flyer’ style electric planes are bringing thousands of new rc pilots into the hobby because of these reasons. Also, they are cheap to buy; a simple 1 or 2 channel RTF model can be bought for well under $100!
Because they are quiet and small, they can be flown in any decent-size open area, hence the name Park Flyer. Public parks, sports fields or empty parking lots can all be used as flying space, provided that flying rc airplanes there is allowed in the first place!

The best type of airplane to buy if you’re first starting out is a high wing trainer type. Airplanes with the wing on top of the fuselage are much more stable than ones with the wing underneath. Another important point to look for is the amount of dihedral the model has. Dihedral is the upward angle of the wings when looking at the model from the front. The more dihedral an airplane has, the more stable it will be in the air, and hence easier to fly.

The majority of electric RTF rc airplanes are high wing, and are designed for beginners into the hobby.

The same rule applies to nitro airplanes. High wing trainers with plenty of dihedral always make good beginner planes.
The big difference between nitro and electric airplanes is where you can fly them. Electric ones can be flown in public places, but nitro planes can really only be flown at a model flying club, or on private land with the owners permission.
This is simply because they are bigger, noisier and faster than their electric cousins.

Also, this makes nitro airplanes harder to learn on because there is more to think about. So if you want to get into the hobby of radio control flying, and want to jump in at the deep end with a nitro model, seeking out your local model flying club is the best thing that you can do as a first step toward your new pastime.

The above information goes for rc helicopters too. In fact, electric rc helicopters have really changed the hobby, because they have become so much cheaper to buy than they ever have been, and many nowadays are designed for the complete beginner.

Even if you’ve never held a rc helicopter before, you can very quickly be mastering the controls of an electric model heli without too much trouble.

Some even come with their own flight simulation software – just load it onto your home computer and practice first, without running the risk of crashing your model!

There are literally hundreds of models to choose from these days (airplanes and helicopters), but always be sure of what you’re buying first. Check out reviews if you can find some, and be happy that the model is suitable for a beginner.

One of the themes that run through my teleclass, Believe! How to Work With Your Beliefs to Grow a Prosperous and Meaningful Business, is the tension between the creative power of thought and resource-depleting habits of wishful thinking. 1. In spite of your best intentions you will make mistakes. To the best of your ability, which may sometimes be slim, welcome these occasions as an opportunity to let go of perfectionism. 4. Humbly welcome opportunities to profit. Maybe it’s time to do some boundary maintenance. Are you pretending that you need to please everyone or that everyone needs to like you in order for you to thrive? Look to yourself, not because you are to blame, but because you are the only one whose behavior you can manage. (Customers are always right where they are.)

6. Sometimes whole systems go wrong or you find out too late that a new project was not quite ready for prime time. (Just ask me.) At times like this you get to practice being available and responsive to customer needs while also taking care of yourself. Sometimes you won’t (yet) know how to solve or resolve the problem and you may resent the time you’re using to reassure clients instead of getting things on track. BREATHE. Learn to say, “I don’t know and I do care and I will get back to you as soon as I can.” Practice saying it with dignity, conviction, and patience. Take some time to wonder what you would need to believe in order for all of this to feel right and true.

7. Owning a business can be isolating. Many entrepreneurs are natural soloists. That doesn’t mean we don’t need or want support, though we may be the last to realize it. Spend some time wondering why other people might want you to thrive. Let your imagination run free as you speculate on what kinds of collaboration could work for you. Turn your complaints about networking into dreams of your ideal support system. What would your business look and feel like if you knew you did not have to have it all together because there was lots of help at hand?

The secrets to creating the possible dream are all related to accepting what is, which includes accepting the support that is everywhere around you and accepting your own desire to build a business that adds real value in the world and allows you to thrive. Some days it will be easier than others to believe that reality and your dream can co-exist. But if you persist with humility, passion, and trust, your dream will teach you how it wants to be made real. I know because my own dream teaches me every day.
