Trampoline Safety

March 2nd, 2009

Trampolines are one of the most popular outdoor activities (alongside more traditional paddling and swimming pools)for adults and children alike, infact in recent years the UK has experienced a huge boom in the popularity of garden trampolines. Alongside the huge rise in trampoline sales is also the unforunate rise of trampoline related injuries and incidents at A&E across the country, its is therefore important that your trampoline is always used safely.

Its worth following these guidelines to ensure your trampoline is used as safely as possible:

1. Ensure that your trampoline is positions on a flat soft surface (grass is ideal). It is not advisable to position a trampoline on a patio, tarmac or gravel surface.

2. Safety Zone – Most trampoline manufacturers advise leaving a safe zone (ie an area that is left clear of obstructions and items) of around 2.5 meters.

3. Young children should always been supervised when using a trampoline.

4. Most trampolines are only recommended for use by one person at a time.

5. Safety Nets are available for nearly every trampoline and there use is highly recommended.

6. Pets and Children should not be allowed underneath the trampoline when the trampoline is in use. Some manufacturers offer a trampoline skirt, which will close off this area securely.

7. Regular maintenance inspections of your garden trampoline are highly recommended. You should regularly check the following:
o The joints on the frame for signs of cracking and weaknesses
o The fabric for any signs of wear or fraying
o The springs for any signs of wear or damage

If any faults are discovered, you should consult a qualified person of the manufacturer.
